African-American Influence on Music

Suitable for grades K-12

Time:  30 minutes

Fee:  None

Student Limit:  60

In this activity, students trace the roots of modern music back to slave chants and rhythms.  Students will listen to a selection of slave chants, blues, jazz, rock & roll and rap music.  With a museum educator and a checklist, they will learn musical terms and determine as they listen which earlier styles influence later styles.  The musical achievements of African-Americans will be highlighted.
