African-American Influence on Music

In this activity, students trace the roots of modern music back to slave chants
and rhythms. Students will listen to
a selection of slave chants, blues, jazz, rock & roll and rap music.
With a museum educator and a checklist, they will learn musical terms and
determine as they listen which earlier styles influence later styles.
The musical achievements of African-Americans will be highlighted.
